  1. Dear Colin,
I've just discovered your list; my ancestor is the second one on your list. Christopher Atkinson was my 4X Great grandfather, an American Merchant/cotton/hide broker; b.1807 in Liverpool, at 20 he arrived in Charleston, South Carolina and began his career as an assistant to J B Clough & Co. (another Liverpool family), and Chris lived at various address's in Charleston, when he wasn't back home in Liverpool.

He married a farmer's daughter of Frodsham, Cheshire, Ellen Sutton in 1846, then it was back to Charleston again where their eldest daughter was born in 1847/48.

After many years as a cotton/hide broker, traveling at least 32 times across the Atlantic, (& having his own company, Chris. Atkinson & Co., commission merchants, by the 1850's/60's,) he eventually settled back in Liverpool where his daughter was married and grandchildren born.

He lived at St Anne's Aigburth for much of his later life, popping up at least once or twice in the census (1871/81). He died in 1885, aged 77.

I wonder if you've come across any more archives referring to him? I'd love to learn more about him. Do email me at js(dot)fox42(at)gmail(dot)com.

    Thanks,
    Bye for now,
    Jessica S. Fox
